Reimagining Education: A New Utopia
Meeting My Daughter Where She’s At – A Journey into Human Design and Learning Styles
This week, I’ve been sitting with a realization: my daughter is struggling in school—not just with her grades, but with feeling seen and understood. She’s been irritated with her boring class, missing the vibrancy of her old teachers and the sense of connection she had last year. The strict teaching methods this year don’t sit well with her, and she’s constantly frustrated by what she sees as unfair or unjust behaviors in the classroom.
She’s been told off more times than I can count for daydreaming and staring out of the window—something that’s as natural to her as breathing. She lacks focus in subjects she doesn’t connect with, and her energy wanes in environments that don’t align with her natural flow.
But here’s what I’ve learned: she’s not the problem.
This week, I decided to meet her where she’s at. That meant digging deeper into her Human Design and how it could explain not just her learning challenges, but her unique brilliance.
Understanding My Daughter Through the Four Transformations
In Human Design, the Four Transformations provide a blueprint for how we digest, learn, and thrive. For my daughter, these Transformations reveal so much about how she experiences the world:
Nervous Digestion: She thrives in dynamic environments where there’s movement and subtle energy. Total silence or overly structured spaces make her restless.
Shores Environment: She feels balanced in spaces where two worlds meet—like sitting by a window that connects the indoors with the outdoors.
Peripheral Perspective: She naturally sees the big picture, noticing patterns and relationships that others might miss.
Desire Motivation: She’s driven by passion and purpose. If something doesn’t excite her or feel meaningful, she struggles to focus.
At the core of it all is her Feeling Cognition—her super sense. She’s deeply attuned to the emotional energy around her, which makes her highly sensitive to the “vibe” of a classroom or teacher. When the environment feels positive and supportive, she lights up; when it’s harsh or unfair, she shuts down.
What This Means in the Classroom
Her experience last year in a disruptive class, ironically, worked better for her because it allowed for more movement and freedom. She could tune into the energy of the room and still thrive amidst the chaos. This year, the stricter, more rigid teaching methods don’t align with her natural rhythms. She needs:
An environment with balance and openness, like seating near windows or in collaborative spaces.
Teachers who value fairness and connection over rigid discipline.
Lessons that inspire her curiosity and tap into her desire for purpose.
Reimagining Education: A New Utopia
This reflection has led me to create something meaningful—not just for my daughter, but for every student who feels out of sync with traditional learning methods. I’ve been diving into how the Four Transformations and Cognition can help students, parents, and teachers build a more realistic, compassionate approach to education.
Education isn’t just about fitting into a system. It’s about understanding how each child learns and creating space for them to thrive. My daughter has taught me that when we meet students where they are—when we see their struggles as clues to their brilliance—we can create something truly transformative.
Your Free Resource: Discover Your Learning Style
Inspired by this journey, I’ve created a free resource to help students:
Understand their unique learning styles through Human Design.
Share these insights with parents and teachers to foster collaboration.
Build confidence in their individuality and natural strengths.
This guide is for students like my daughter—those who need permission to learn in a way that feels right for them.
The Path Forward
My daughter still stares out the window, and she probably always will. But instead of seeing it as a flaw, I now see it as her brilliance at work—a moment of connection between her inner world and the one around her.
A New Utopia calls us to reimagine education. It’s not about fixing kids—it’s about understanding them. It’s about creating environments where their natural gifts can shine.
